What are the grants?
SOS grants provide financial relief for individuals and families with medical needs not covered or not fully covered by health insurance. SOS helps to fill the gap between what medical services/items a person needs and what they can afford without regard to insurance.
How does the grant work?
If a grant is awarded, SOS takes care of any approved medical costs remaining once all insurance plans have paid) (see graphic below.)
How do I work with a family who is applying for a grant?
The family will need a one-page letter from the child’s M.D. or D.O. which must clearly answer the following questions:
- What is the individual’s specific medical condition(s)?
- What specific impact does the individual’s medical condition(s) have on the individual’s life? (This may include medical, social, mental, etc.)
- What specific therapy, treatment and/or medical services does the doctor recommend?
- Why does the doctor recommend these?
- Has the individual received the therapy, treatment and/or medical services before? If yes, have they been effective?
- What result does the doctor hope to achieve with this therapy, treatment and/or medical services?
How do I work with a family who was approved for a grant?
As shown below, the family must maximize their health insurance plan first for approved medical services/items. Once the health insurance plan has submitted payment to you, please send any remaining amount due to the family in the form of an invoice, not a health insurance claim form. SOS is not a secondary insurance plan. If the family has no coverage for a requested service/item, please send an invoice to the family. The family will forward to SOS and we will pay you directly. If you do not participate with insurance, please provide the family with a detailed invoice.
How can I help support this cause?
You can contribute by:
- making a direct contribution
- offering a discount on services/items for our grant recipients (allowing grant dollars to go further)
- partnering with SOS on fundraising (sponsor an event, etc.)
- making a purchase in our online store
